This refers to the editorial, “West Bengal by any name” (August 31). Vanity of power makes one blind. The effort of changing the name of West Bengal by its supreme authority, lacks merit, historical perception and constructive plan. It is result of temporarily excitement. As a State of the brightest people, West Bengal has a unique identity in the world. However, if it is named as ‘Bangla', the world will mistake it as ‘Bangladesh'. It is unfortunate that this changing name procedure has little connection with the common people.
Moreover, Changing names is crucial for politics in Bengal. Politically-motivated drivers, instead of empowering people, giving them freedom of expression, want to write their names in the history with baseless cause. Also, two-name system of one State is illogical and lacks firm ideology. Sometimes majority does mostly wrong. Therefore, the drivers must be realist with far-sighted intellectual view. They must be dedicated to the service for the betterment of the people, protecting legacy.
