Reforming cricket

Published on:

Sir — This refers to the article, “Dismantling cricket zamindari” (July 22) by Sandeep Bamzai. The Supreme Court’s acceptance of recommendations of the lodha panel is a welcome initiative to re-orient the functioning of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

The creation of near permanent tenures, concentration of power in the BCCI president, financial irregularities and impropriety related to the Indian Premier league were some unsavoury aspects of the cricketing administration that robbed the sport of its majesty.

By directing a new structural hierarchy for the BCCI, an age-cap for its officials, resolving conflicts of interest concerning serving bureaucrats and Ministers on the its board, and strict guidelines for appointments of its officials, the apex court has pushed for a reform agenda.
