Recalibrate governance

Published on:

Sir — Just about anyone in the ruling BJP or the Sangh Parivar is making known ‘authoritative’ views on contentious issues such as Article 370, leader of Opposition status, Uniform Civil Code etc. It is becoming apparent that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is isolating himself by acting more as the Chief Executive Officer of India Inc, rather than asserting himself as the country’s Prime Minister.

He perhaps intends to leverage his majority in the lok Sabha more for administrative streamlining than to check irresponsible comments of his party leaders. His acolytes in the party are routinely jumping the gun on issues of far-reaching import. But Mr Modi is silent and does not even tweet, which he used to during his election campaign.

It may soon appear that others have succeeded in managing the Prime Minister and not the other way around. Governance has holistic connotations and cannot be restricted to growth targets alone. Mr Modi may find soon enough that the economic rein is operated effectively through political gears, and that his administrative nuances could get nullified by some of his strident and myopic men.
