Real gem

Sir — Media reports suggest that Nirav Modi, who is wanted in India for Punjab National Bank fraud allegations, is now in UK, and is claiming political asylum from what he calls “political persecution”. Another Indian, Vijay Mallya, who is already in london, is also wanted in India for cheating and money laundering cases.

Before UK becomes a safe haven for cheats and fraudsters, the Government will do well to extradite them to India without any sympathy. They should face the law of the land, if these worthies were so sure of no wrong-doing. Instead, they fled the country and this in itself indicated that they are at fault. Reportedly, Mallya indicated some poor conditions in jail back home in India. Jails are not luxury hotels to offer such facilities. These miscreants must be treated like any other prisoners. UK must throw these cheats out of its country before they start similar activities there and make their banks bleed. But as the saying goes: Old habits die hard.
