Sir — This refers to the article, “Treaty that reflects a meeting of hearts” (August 27) by Rajesh Singh. A new Nepal-India friendship pact must be based on the principles of foreign policy conduct — on the Nepalese side — that should be embedded in the yet-to-be-written Constitution.
Since the situation is politically volatile there and Nepal today is vastly different from the 1950s when the treaty was signed, a new pact will not be worth the paper it is written on without a political consensus which has constitutional sanction.
