Re-consider reservation policy, beneficiaries

Published on:

This refers to the report, “SC scraps Jats' Central quota” (March 18). Vote-bank politics and muscle-tactics adopted in agitations demanding reservation, make the Union and the State Governments usually succumb to reservations for certain communities, even though these communities might not deserve inclusion in the reserved categories. The policy of reservations is in itself a big failure, since it could not homogeneously mix people of reserved categories in society in the stipulated 15 years that was initially fixed by the framers of our Constitution.

If the reservation is to be continued indefinitely, all reserved categories like the SC, the ST and the OBC should be merged into one category, with an annual review of progress or benefits made by different castes/tribes by virtue of such reservation. Also, since backwardness in reserved categories is due to their generally having large families, the benefits of reservation may be reserved for persons/families with up to two children.
