Rawalpindi's game

Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Nawaz Sharif must act” (June 10).

The desire of the Prime Minister of Pakistan to have peaceful and friendly relations with India appears to be a sham.  In any case, he has no control over affairs regarding India; the Army manages that. The instant violation of the ceasefire along the line of Control on the heels of Mr Sharif’s express declaration of reconciliation with India, is a clear manifestation of the dominating power and influence of the Army in Pakistan over the elected civilian Government. The Army will pose the real challenge to the Sharif Government.

India should firmly and sternly intimate to the Pakistani regime that, unless the plotters and perpetrators of the Mumbai carnage are brought to justice, terror training camps in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir are dismantled and cross-border infiltration is stopped, dialogue with Islamabad for friendly relations will be a futile exercise.
