Rape is not a minor crime, don't use kid gloves

This refers to the report, “Dec 16: Minor gets away with 3 yrs in reform home!” (September 1).

When a juvenile justice court ruled that the teenager, who was claimed to be the ‘most brutal' of all the accused in the infamous Delhi gang rape case, be confined to a reform home for three years, one is left wondering whether the sort of justice system that makes a clear differentiation between the quantum of punishment for crimes committed by adults and juveniles needs an unbiased relook into or not.

A person who can so savagely execute such a wicked deed without any premeditation is by all considerations aware of what he is doing. In such cases, where the magnitude of the crime gives no scope for distinction between those minor or major of age, it is necessary that any legal defence based on age be scrapped. The accused should be punished according to his crime, and not his age. Violent juvenile rapists and murderers should be treated as adults in a court of law.
