Rajan's arrest will throw light on criminal acts

This refers to the editorial, “A very important catch” (October 28). The arrest of Chhota Rajan is an important achievement for the Indian security establishment. The gangster's arrest can yield strategic actionable information about the crime syndicates that operate on a global scale and have become a menace for Governments in several countries.

As a close accomplice of Dawood Ibrahim, Rajan had challenged the Indian state for years, weakened its institutions and poisoned its body politic. His arrest, therefore, can possibly throw light on the criminal activities flourishing under official patronage.

However, the Government should be cautious of the fact that this sudden breakthrough might actually turn out to be a surrender-in-disguise by a criminal seeking a relatively secure retirement home. The media should refrain from displaying lynch mentality on the pretext of voicing public opinion.
