Railway Budget is more of pro-people measures

This refers to the editorial, “Sending right signals” (February 26). The Rail Budget is less on statistics and more on people-friendly measures. Minister for Railways Suresh Prabhu has rightly focused on restructuring and rejuvenating Indian Railways. Despite being hampered by a huge loss and an unforeseen mind-boggling expenditure, Mr Prabhu's Budget hopes to earn a revenue growth of 10 per cent this year. As expected, passenger fares have been untouched. The provision for three more dedicated freight corridors is welcome. Fully unreserved long-distance Antyodaya trains, assurance of a confirmed ticket, 50 per cent augmentation of lower berth quota for senior citizens and cancellation of tickets through phone are pro-people measures.

Mr Prabhu’s target to eliminate all 7,539 unmanned crossings by 2020, to have more CCTV cameras on platforms and a 24x7 helpline for women, are right steps towards enhancing passenger safety and security. Finally, calling coolies as ‘sahayaks’ should bring cheer to the hard-working tribe.
