Rail safety, not just train fare, should be priority

Published on:

This refers to the news report, “Inundated tracks give in, kill 29 in twin derailment” (August 6). The twin train accidents are tragic and horrifying, to say the least. Were the accidents natural or man-madeIJ Why abundant precautions were not taken by the authorities despite the knowledge that heavy rains were lashing the areas of accident, between Bhirangi and Khirkiya stationsIJ How come the locopilots of the two trains that passed minutes before could not alert the authoritiesIJ All these questions will remain unanswered. Mr Suresh Prabhu is doing well since he took over as the Minister for Railways. However, much more needs to be done on safety aspects.

Not increasing passenger fares but allowing safety to take a backseat, is one crucial aspect which Mr Prabhu needs to pay attention. Polishing of technology is a must for better communication between locopilots, guards and authorities. Also, railway personnel especially on the ground level, need better remuneration and adequate rest.
