Sir — This refer to the news report, “Raja Bhaiyya quits; CBI probe ordered” (March 5). Facing all-round criticism for the deteriorating law and order situation in Uttar Pradesh, Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav’s announcement of a CBI probe into the killing of a police officer is commendable. However, the people of the State expect more from Mr Yadav than just a visit to Deoria or the handing over of a cheque, which is not a substitute for a life lost.
This unfortunate incident has once again given Mr Yadav an opportunity to take control and come down strongly on crime, criminals and lawlessness that abound in the State, and regain people’s faith and confidence. The guilty, irrespective of their political or official credentials, should not be spared or kept out from the domain of the investigation.
