This refers to the editorial, “Racist, uncouth netas” (April 3). The least that Union Minister Giriraj Singh could have done is to have tendered an unconditional apology for his crass comments on Congress president Sonia Gandhi. But he did not do that, and this shows his arrogance. Though Bharatiya Janata Party president Amit Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi distanced themselves from Mr Singh's remarks, this is not enough. The erring Minister needs to be punished so that it serves as a lesson for others who are of a similarly demented mindset.
We all know that none from the list of Mr Mulayam Singh Yadav, Mr Sharad Yadav or Mr Sriprakash Jaiswal has been punished by the respective parties. Therefore, if the BJP were to act severely against Mr Singh, it will set a high benchmark of intolerance to such racist remarks. The party must not fear any backlash in Bihar; it needs to rise above petty political considerations.
