Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Probing one of its own” (November 14). The Chief Justice of India wasted no time in ordering an inquiry into the allegation made by a recent law graduate. The accusation by this former intern against the then serving judge not only show the gender biases in our system and the mindset of certain people, but it is also a pointer towards the overall sexism that Indian women invariably face. What needs to be further examined is if there have been more such victims.
The problem is that such biases are there even in the higher echelons of society. Recently, Central Bureau of Investigation Director Ranjit Sinha demonstrated his insensitivity to women through his controversial remark on rape. A system is needed to not only convict law-breakers but also those who make such remarks about women. Meanwhile, we hope that the former law intern gets justice. The panel is scheduled to record her statement on Monday. She must be fair and frank, and set an example for others.
