Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Travesty of democracy” (February 20). While Tamil Nadu heaved a sigh of relief when the Supreme Court verdict on the disproportionate assets appeal case came just in time, it is also regrettable that the incumbent Chief Minister is alleged to be a proxy of the now convicted VK Sasikala in a Bangalore jail. It is also alleged that the State Government is going to be remote-controlled by the powers-that-be, now languishing in prison.
Moreover, the confidence vote conducted in the Tamil Nadu Assembly also looks like a farce, given that the AIADMK legislators said to have allegiance to the new Chief Minister were held captive in a resort for more than 10 days and herded like sheep into the Assembly to vote on dotted lines.
Under the circumstances, it becomes paramount that the new Chief Minister disproves this apprehension by his acts and deeds, and demonstrates that decisions taken are his own and not tutored by any extra-constitutional elements.
