Provocative Pakistan deserves the snub it has been given

This refers to the editorial, “Red lines for Pakistan” (August 19). When Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif met on the sidelines of Mr Modi's oath-taking ceremony on May 26, it was agreed that the Foreign Secretaries of the two countries would meet in the near future to expedite mutual dialogue on common issues. But Pakistan has violated the atmosphere necessary for cordial talks. There has been an increase in ceasefire violations along the line of Control. Also, despite India's official warning, Pakistan's High Commissioner engaged in talks with the separatist leaders from Kashmir.

Talks with Hurriyat leaders were a challenge to the dignity of the country and to the stature of the Union Government. Back home, since Mr Sharif is battling a stiff challenge from domestic players like Mr Imran Khan, and with his position considerably weakened, the Pakistani Prime Minister perhaps thinks the stand-off with India will help him tide over the crisis.
