Sir — Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s assertion that the triple talaq mechanism has ruined the lives of many Muslim women, is true. But he must not politicise the issue for vote banks. This is against the bona fide interest of Muslim women.
Undoubtedly, the bizarre system adversely affects the dignity of women and, therefore, a comprehensive revamping of the issue is inevitable. In a secular democracy, an elected regime is obliged to exercise its unassailable power to safeguard the fundamental rights of the citizens guaranteed in the Constitution, irrespective of religion/community/gender etc and no religion/ community can claim supremacy over the Constitution.
