Protect secular bloggers, save secular Bangladesh

Published on:

Bangladeshi blogger Niloy Chakrabarti Neel's brutal murder is another example of increasing intolerance creeping into an otherwise secular country. After Avijit Roy, Washiqur Rehman and Ananta Bijoy Das, Chakrabarti is the fourth blogger to fall prey to Islamic extremists. His crime was that he was an atheist, fighting against radical forces, including 1971 war criminals in Bangladesh.

Bloggers all over the world are independent citizens, with opinions of their own. One can agree with these opinions or discard them with impunity. The readers aren't specially invited to go through them. Generally, bloggers do not identify themselves with any party or religion.

The inaction of the Bangladeshi Government can be deciphered from the fact that it failed to act despite Chakrabarti reporting threats to his life. It is up to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to halt religious fundamentalists  in their track and keep the country's secular fabric alive.
