Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Insuring India’s farmers” (January 15). The NDA Government’s new crop insurance scheme is a very progressive step towards protecting farmers against crop failure. The best part of the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana is that it based on very low premiums; 1.5 per cent on Rabi crops, two per cent on Kharif crops and five per cent on commercial or horticultural crops. If the implementation is good, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheme will prove revolutionary and reform the farming sector.
