Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Boost to the economy” (October 22). The BJP’s victory in Haryana and Maharashtra is significant because both these States are economic hubs and have the potential to become real powerhouses in the months to come. The editorial has rightly mentioned about the pseudo-secular mindsets of the present rulers of Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal, who are more mindful of their caste and communal-based vote-banks than economic growth, development and governance issues. These rulers are unlikely to understand that economic development is the key to the enhancement of the conditions of millions who live a deprived life today. But, if they continue with their present politics, they will soon learn the harder way.
The BJP’s lok Sabha majority offers a good opportunity to the States to cooperate with the Centre to take the country forward on second-generation economic reforms like the Goods and Services Tax regime, disinvestment, infusion of foreign direct investment in various sectors etc.
