Prioritise services

Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Unhealthy food on tracks” (July 24). The quality of food served on premium trains like Rajdhani and Duronto is deplorabl. In spite of the rocket-high prices, the Indian Railways has failed to ensure hygiene, health and efficiency in the delivery of catering services.

Successive rail Ministers have focused on various aspects of rail management, but the issue of clean and edible food on the wheels is one that has been largely ignored.

The railways should introduce the facility of keeping catering optional so that passengers can at least be spared from the trauma of paying for their own ill health. The dream of bullet trains can hang in balance until the basic issue of safety and cleanliness, in tune with the mantra of ‘Swachh Bharat’ is met.
