Prevention first

Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Growing concerns on TB” (May 13). Given that India is home to 2.2 million tuberculosis (TB) patients out of a global 9.6 million, and 40 per cent of the population is infected with either active or latent tuberculosis bacteria, the TB menace should be fought with adequate nutrition and medication.

Sadly, India remains a fertile ground for the highly infectious TB mainly because of poverty and malnutrition. Preventative measures such as more nutritious food, distribution of mid-day meal, and curative ones like adequate treatment regimens, must be followed on a war-footing.
