Preventing suicides

Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Progressive legislation” (April 1). Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. People experiencing such thoughts believe that there is no future for them.

The lack of a long-term future and no way to imagine a positive future lead to apathy, which becomes depression, and then leads to suicidal thoughts. If you fail in your first attempt, you become less likely to do so the second time.

However, if you have to deal with the stress, and that charges will be pressed against you for committing suicide, you would want to just finish it off for good.
