President's rebuke has come at the right time

Published on:

This refers to the report, “Pranab rebukes MPs for disruption of Parliament” (December 9). Noise is not a substitute for debate. Nor is disruption appreciated by the people who pay for work to be done. Getting the day’s allowances without work should weigh on the MPs' conscience. It does not seem that there are any political or electoral penalties to pay for the MPs’ non-performance in Parliament. It is not surprising then that, President Pranab Mukherjee should have lamented the constant disruption, rebuking parliamentarians, “For god’s sake, do your job. You are meant to transact business”.

Who benefits from thoughtless sloganeering and kicking up of ruckusIJ A divided Opposition has only weakened its case. There was a lot, the opposition parties could have done to pin down the Government, but by running away from debate, they have perhaps ended up playing to the Government-scripted tune.
