Presidential system

Sir — This refers to the report, “President’s R-Day eve comment leads to raging debate” (January 27). What President Pranab Mukherjee said cannot be disputed.

Political instability plagues the nation. Anarchy is caused by a handful of politicians brazenly playing vote-bank politics and dividing society on religious and caste lines.

Mr Mukherjee should have advocated a switch to a presidential form of Government, where a directly elected President can choose his Cabinet without being bullied by smaller parties. This will ensure good governance and political stability. The Westminster model will continue to bring instability.
