Preposterous suggestion

Published on:

Sir — This refers to the editorial, “What an idea, Moilyji!” (September 3). Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Veerappa Moily’s suggestion to shut down petrol pumps from 8pm to 8am to minimise fuel use by consumers is preposterous, to say the least, and demonstrates the Congress-led UPA regime’s paucity of ideas to tackle the looming economic crisis.

Also, why should the people be penalised for the acts of omission and commission and financial mismanagement of the GovernmentIJ The UPA has failed to contain the current account deficit, control the slide of the rupee, revive growth and check inflation. Its decision to raise the cap on subsidies on petrol and diesel will have a huge impact on not just the price of fuel but on transport and other crucial areas. Instead of issuing such facile statements, the Government should seriously get down to resolving the crisis in a pragmatic manner.
