Sir — The Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation must be applauded for restoring power supply in most areas in Chennai within a day. This, despite the fact that more than 10,000 electric poles, 450 distribution transformers and 24 high tension transmission towers were damaged due to cyclone Vardha.
One of the main reasons for the power failure is the overhead transmission lines that fell a victim to the gale and the trees that fell over them. Some of the overhead lines got cut when huge hoardings and flush boards fell on them. Hence, it is crucial that the Government take measures to switch over to underground cable system and get rid of electric poles and overhead power lines.
