Sir — This refers to the article, “Delhi’s dirty secret of privatisation” (July 29) by Sandhya Jain. The problems pointed out arose because the entire process was designed to serve the interests of power companies, and not consumers. A power company can spend crores of rupees to swing decisions its way. But how much bribe can a consumer offerIJ
The problems can be fixed. First, the mandate of the existing discoms should be terminated, citing power outages and tariff hike. Power distribution should be auctioned again. Companies must submit the per unit tariff they will charge the consumers. The company offering the lowest tariff should be given the mandate to distribute electricity. Annual increases should be defined in advance and be commensurate with inflation and GDP growth.
