This refers to the editorial, “End violent Jat protests” (February 22). The large-scale outbreak of violence in Haryana due to the Jat agitation with demands of reservation is a worrying development. India’s populist politics has trained the people to believe that the route to social emancipation is through reservations in Government jobs and educational institutions. Mainstream political parties too have for long supported the reservation policy. It is now their responsibility to repair the fissures created by the system.
