Poor tactics

Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Search on for scapegoats” (May 15). The Congress can never shun its tendency to glorify the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty. All mistakes and blunders of the UPA2 were laid at the doorsteps of Mr Manmohan Singh, and some reasonable success stories were credited to party vice president Rahul Gandhi.

The Congress appeared to be in its own dreamland because the party seemed to think, willingly or unwillingly, that the thumbs-up for the UPA by the voters in 2009 was a pat on the back for UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Mr Rahul Gandhi.

In fact, it was the other way around. The people had reacted positively to the able work done by Mr Singh as Prime Minister of UPA1, and gave him another chance. People had seen in Mr Singh a mature though simple man. Mr Singh’s efforts were not in sync with Ms Gandhi’s intentions. By tying the Prime Minister down in UPA2, the Congress has brought about its own downfall. Unfortunately, Mr Singh allowed himself to be a pawn in the murky political game played by Ms Gandhi.

It is still a mystery as to how Ms Sonia Gandhi could not read the writing on the wall about Mr Gandhi’s disconnect with the people. She could have assiduously nurtured her son under the watchful eyes of Mr Singh, without offending the former or glorifying the latter. By not doing so, she confined a reluctant Rahul Gandhi in a world of his own, far away from what it takes to be a grassroots leader who is able to hold fort on his own. The result is there for all to see.
