Polluter pays

Published on:

Sir — This refers to the editorial, “River-cleaning sutra” (January 15). The National Green Tribunal’s recent decision to heavily fine those who dump waste into the Yamuna river, is a suitable deterrent to all those who destroy the cleanliness of rivers, several of which are treated sacred as well as lifelines.

There are many types of polluters like individual house-holders throwing puja waste on auspicious occasions, property developers throwing debris, factories on the banks dumping huge quantities of harmful waste, municipal drains offloading harmful, virulent sewages into the rivers etc. Such practices can be curtailed if our local bodies and other authorities take up the issue in a missionary spirit and implement the anti-pollution programmes in right earnest.
