Sir — Any law to protect Dalits should not deprive others of their fundamental right of liberty. Assertion by the Supreme Court judges that they are not against the SC/ST Act but only protecting the innocent and that they are not concerned about what is happening outside the court is laudable. The provisions of the SC/ST Act for immediate arrest of the accused on a complaint filed under the Act without any preliminary inquiry and denial of anticipatory bail are draconian. Nevertheless, the matter has been unduly politicised and the country was put on fire over it.
