Sir — If reports are correct, President Pranab Mukherjee has rightly held the view that Presidents and Vice Presidents should be persons with a political background. A President often confronts political turmoil, and more so when a hung Parliament situation develops. An experienced politician can effectively handle such issues.
In addition to being politicians, candidates known for integrity and expertise in the Constitution should be fielded and elected to preserve and protect the sanctity of the President’s post.
Politicians who have leanings to their parent party and occupy the post of President will only bring into disrepute the highest constitutional office. A politician-President should keep aside his political affiliations to deserve to be in the post.
