Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Rahul’s test” (February 19). The dissolution of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) ahead of the plenary session of the All India Congress Committee (AICC), scheduled in March for the formal ratification of Rahul Gandhi as the party president, signifies the Congress scion’s readiness for his most significant duties before the 2019 General Election when the UPA, along with allies, has to take on the BJP-led ruling NDA at the Centre.
Elated by the old grand party’s promising performance in the Gujarat Assembly poll and the win in two lok Sabha and one Assembly seat in by-elections recently held in the BJP-ruled Rajasthan, the Congress president has now to showcase his political sagacity in successfully constituting the party’s highest decision-making body CWC with a good mix of both the old and the new guards to ensure their balanced representation sans any heart-burns — the formers’ experience and political acumen and the latter’s enthusiasm and energy will simply come handy, provided working in tandem. Sonia Gandhi’s instrumental role will also facilitate the formation as her presence will prevail upon all and sundry in the party to accept both the selection and election of members in the CWC.
