Sir — This refers to the article, “A judicial conundrum” by VK Bahuguna (April 24). Vice President Venkaiah Naidu rightly rejected the notice submitted by opposition parties for a motion for the impeachment of the Chief Justice of India. No wonder, eminent jurist Soli Sorabjee made a scathing attack on its decision, saying, “This is the worst that could happen to the independence of judiciary.” The impeachment motion led by the Congress marks a new low in politics.
A competitive race for 2019 lok Sabha election has contributed to the erosion of the Parliament as well as the judiciary. The judgments of the Supreme Court are sometimes unpopular. Each time the Supreme Court has stood up to the executive, history has judged it highly. Each time it crawled, like during Emergency, history hasn’t forgiven or forgotten. But if one looks closely, ever since that Press conference by four top judges, it’s only the political class which has benefitted.
