Political class needs to look within

This refers to the report, “SC refuses leniency for convicted MPs/MlAs” (September 5). The Supreme Court has done well to stand firm on its order preventing convicted politicians from entering Parliament and the Assemblies.

The laudable intent behind the judgement is to cleanse the political system which has been hijacked by criminal-politicians, thus making a mockery of what a sound and effective political ethos should be all about.

For far too long there have been calls for implementing electoral reforms; for unshackling the political system of money and muscle power, for political parties to be more transparent in their functioning and ensure that tainted leaders are denied tickets to contest polls. It is not surprising that the apex court had to step in to do what the political parties and their leaders ought to have done themselves. The very fact that the political class has sought a review of the verdict demonstrates their self-interest over the larger public interest.
