Petty criticism

Published on:

Sir — Reports about the Congress taking swipes at Prime Minister Narendra Modi while hailing an award given to former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh by Japan is amusing. The Congress’s response shows the Congress leadership’s desperation to catch a straw to celebrate in an area of darkness — a series of electoral defeats, reducing the grand old party to an unprecedented rump. The Congress is entitled to its moment of joy, but where is the need to criticise Mr Modi in the processIJ

Most of the time in his public life, Mr Singh served as an economist-bureaucrat in the IMF/World Bank and the Government of India. He was the Finance Minister in the Congress Government led by Narasimha Rao in the 1990s, and became the Prime Minister for 10 years until 2014. Thanks to his dismal performance, the Congress was voted out in a most humiliating manner, winning only 44 seats, less than 10 per cent of 543 in the lok Sabha. Thus, who is the better judge of Mr Singh: The people of India or the JapaneseIJ
