People seeking suicide need help, not prisons

This refers to the editorial, “Humanitarian decision” (December 12). The Centre has rightly decided to de-criminalise attempt to suicide by altering or even scrapping Section 309 of the Indian Penal Code, which deals in punishment to the survivor of a suicide attempt. The editorial has rightly said that such survivors have to suffer twice, first by the circumstances which led them to take this drastic step, and second, through persecution by the law. Although life in all respects is better than death, one who tries to end one’s life does not do so just in jest. One is driven by circumstances.

The divergent view between the law Commission and the Supreme Court was the main reason over Section 309 remaining in force for so many years. The Union Government must now ensure that abetment to suicide, which is a crime, should be stringently dealt with. Necessary changes in the penal provisions, if needed, should be done.
