Paying tributes

Sir — This refers to the article, “Cook who refused to be a traitor” (May 1) by Faizan Ahmad. It is good to know about the story of Battakh Mian Ansari. It was indeed a great sacrifice of the cook, who dared to divulge the conspiracy by forbidding Mahatma Gandhi to drink poison-laced milk during Champaran Satyagraha movement, 100 years ago.

He was made to pay the price for disobeying WS Erwin’s order. He was tortured and was fired from his job. His home was razed to the ground and his land was confiscated. Now, India should honour the man and help his heirs for his silently contributing to India’s freedom struggle at the cost of everything.
