This refers to the editorial, “Administrative apathy” (September 17). The tragic deaths of dengue-stricken children in the wake of denial of admission in hospitals in Delhi have caught the nation's eye. However hard pressed the hospitals were to accommodate the children, it was plainly inhuman to turn away those who had reached their door steps to save their children's lives knowing fully well that delay in giving medical care could prove fatal. Shockingly, hospitals exist to fleece the patients in whichever way possible.
It is a failure on part of the political leadership that the healthcare apparatus is struggling. It is not impossible to expand infrastructure to cater to the medical needs of the growing population. But the political leadership needs the requisite will to give priority to people's health and allocate the needed funds. It is time people served show cause notices to the elected Governments as to why they, so callously, abdicate their primary social responsibility of providing health care to all despite their station in life.
