Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Hypocrisy unlimited” (December 20). It is shameful that the US authorities should have ill-treated an Indian diplomat. The allegations levelled by the diplomat’s maid have not been fairly probed and the diplomat had not been adequately informed about her alleged offence. The US could have intimated New Delhi about the alleged offence before arresting the diplomat in violation of international norms.
Steps taken by the Government, like withdrawing the airport passes of US diplomats, halting their import clearances and dismantling traffic barricades at the US embassy, are commendable. It is also welcome that leaders across the political spectrum snubbed a delegation of US parliamentarians. The US should know that India isn’t its client state.
