Sir — It is saddening that the petition filed by the Delhi Commission for Women against the release of the juvenile convict in the Nirbhaya gangrape case has been dismissed by the Supreme Court. The apex court said that its hands were “tied” by the law.
The December 16 Nirbhaya rape case shook the conscience of the entire nation. After widespread public outrage, the present Government brought a Bill to amend the age of a juvenile from 18 years to 16 years, which was cleared by the lok Sabha but had got stuck in the Rajya Sabha.
Rape is an intentional crime, committed by a person in his full senses. One who has committed rape must be tried under normal law, irrespective of his age. There cannot be any leniency
