Parliament must revamp juvenile justice law

Published on:

It is unfortunate that the Indian Parliament, instead of being based on lokneeti, an ideal system which should be for the people, by the people and of the people, is based on rajneeti, a tailor-stitched system for the politicians, by the politicians and of the politicians. The most dreaded criminal in the infamous Nirbhaya case will remain virtually free, because our Parliament could not amend the legislation on time. The Union Government too failed in its duty to bring an Ordinance on the issue because of the ineffectiveness of Parliament in this regard.

India must not be led by self-termed human rights activists who cry for the abolition of death penalty which is a must to act as a deterrent against crimes requiring capital punishment. Rather, strict measures should be taken to decide mercy petitions in a time-bound period, followed by time-bound execution with no provision to approach the courts after the rejection of the mercy plea.
