Parliament may function, but key Bills hang fire

This refers to the editorial, “Too little and too lateIJ” (December 21). It bodes well that the Rajya Sabha has agreed to do business at the fag end of the session. Important legislations pertaining to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, atomic energy, anti-hijacking decisions, Appropriation, commercial courts and arbitration will now see the light of the day.

It is also heartening to see that the parliamentarians have decided to burn the midnight oil to compensate in some measure, the loss of time and pass important Bills. But the flip side of the matter is that neither the much-needed Goods and Services Tax Bill nor the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Amendment Bill is going to be passed. Perhaps an understanding among the leaders is required. While the GST is essential for the country’s economic well-being, it is hanging fire due to the NDA’s lack of strength in the upper House.
