Pakistan must shed its anti-India stance

This refers to the editorial, “Pakistan's hypocrisy” (June 20).

Pakistani authorities should respect the people's mandate to first construct a liberal democracy. Unfortunately, most of that country's rulers play a crucial role in using fundamentalist religious power. Mr Nawaz Sharif and his group are not exceptions. They know that their destiny depends on blindly opposing India and by indulging in cross-border terrorism. A true democracy must cherish secular credentials, the rule of law and an equal rule opportunity for all. Unfortunately, Mr Sharif's group wants to compromise with religious fanatics to remain in power.

Pakistan should treat India as a natural friend. India never behaves with aggression towards its neighbour and always welcomes Pakistan in the constructive development of relations, economy and stability. The Sharif regime should engage its attention in building infrastructure and other structures of social welfare, instead of placating religious extremists. It remains to be seen whether the new Government in Islamabad rises to the occasion or falls prey to anti-India elements there.
