Padma controversy

Published on:

Sir — The number of persons who get honoured with the Padma awards on Republic Day, is becoming too large. Since 1955, on an average, 70-odd people have received these awards every year. The awards have become a topic of criticism on the basis of discrimination too. Strangely, these awards are now being even demanded by those who believe they have been left out undeservingly.

National honour cannot be demanded; it has to come automatically at the right time to the right person.  Some people who don’t deserve the Padma award, get it because of their high-profile connections. It is better to dispense with such national honours. But, bravery awards for children and honours to defence personnel should continue.
