This refers to the article, “Mukherjee's footprints at the Raisina Hill” (June 21) by Kalyani Shankar. What was the root cause behind India's partition and subsequent exhibition of violenceIJ Nothing but sheer communalism. But the greatest tragedy lies in the fact that, instead of learning any lesson about the ill-effects of communal hatred, India has simply failed to nip communalism. It is unfortunate to see how the mean-minded imperialist lot continues to dominate Indian polity. That this multi-lingual multi-religious secular democratic country is neither a colony nor a property of a particular religious or linguistic group, simply eludes the parochial dark mindsets of the communal chauvinist lot.
This is the reason our President Pranab Mukherjee is continuously laying stress to resist this menace of intolerance and communalism. let India become a really free country where people can exercise their own independent thoughts, cultural traits and dietary habits without any inhibition or fear of getting threatened or murdered, like MM Kalburgi, Govind Pansare or Mohammad Akhlaq. Far from being a ‘rubber stamp’ or dancing to the tune of the incumbent Government, Mukherjee has not hesitated to call a spade a spade. India is indeed proud and fortunate to have such a conscientious President. In this dark age, Pranab Mukherjee is a beacon of light in our wretched polity.
