Sir — This refers to the article, “Balancing valid concerns” (November 30) by Rinku Ghosh. The Hadiya episode is a precursor to similar issues. The sway of the tide and times has seen the world’s two largest democracies grapple with protections afforded to fundamental rights. The United States, under Donald Trump, has brought in executive fiats for selective immigration. Though it dealt with amorphous rights of non-citizens, and is in process of judicial review, earlier guaranteed fundamental rights of citizens are being revisited. In India, as we saw in the Hadiya case, the Supreme Court stepped into reaffirm Constitutional guarantees but has also asked the NIA to continue its probe into serious allegations of coercion (love jihad). Enduring democracies, however, have to nurture a sense of fair play.
