This refers to the editorial, “For a unified tax regime” (August 5). It is the spirit of cooperative federalism that has helped achieve the Goods and Services Tax Bill the required political consensus. Though the current dispensation deserves credit for the GST Bill, we must not forget that GST alone will not translate into improvement in the ranking of ease of doing business index.
There are other issues such as complicated labour laws, deficient infrastructure, rampant corruption and bureaucratic logjam, which needs to be sorted out. To remain as the ‘bright spot’ of the world, we must kick-start devising other reforms, otherwise, the tumbling world market will not shy in consuming India too.
