Opportunistic DMK

Published on:
Sir — This refers to the report, “Congress ‘untouchable’, declares DMK chief” (December 16). The DMK’s decision to slam the doors on a possible alliance with the Congress is a classic example of the party’s opportunistic attitude.
Though the 2G Spectrum scam cropped up long back and then Union Minister A Raja and Member of Parliament Kanimozhi, belonging to the DMK, were arrested and incarcerated, the party did not choose to quit the Union Government or oppose the Congress at that time.
When the UPA regime enhanced petrol prices in May, though the DMK supremo initially threatened to withdraw support to the UPA Government, he later backtracked. Even on the Sri lankan Tamils issue, the DMK was not ready to forsake the Congress, though the UPA’s position was not satisfactory.
Now, after the Congress has suffered a humiliating debacle in the Assembly elections, the DMK has realised there is no political gain in latching on to a losing party. Mr M Karunanidhi has attacked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and the Union Minister for Finance with regard to the 2G Spectrum case. By stating that he had excellent relations with Mr Atal Bihari Vajpayee, he has indirectly invited the BJP leadership to ally with the DMK. What devious opportunism!
